It is one of the jewels of Languedoc: the Abbey of Fontfroide, located about fifteen km south-west of Narbonne, in an enchanting and wild site. Founded in the 11th century, it prospered in the 12th and 13th centuries, giving rise to a pope, a few cardinals, and spreading other abbeys. Its visit is already a delight and, within it, it has a rarely accessible treasure: its library decorated by the great Symbolist painter Odilon Redon.
Bought by Gustave and Madeleine Fayet, the abbey welcomed great artists of the time at the beginning of the 20th century and it was in this context that Odilon Redon, impressed by the place, created the monumental triptych Day, Night and Silence which decorates the library.
Every second Sunday of the month at 2 p.m., Fontfroide opens the doors of the library decorated by Odilon Redon in order to admire the paintings of the Prince of the Dream.
Five exceptional guided tours are being organized between now and this summer and reservations are highly recommended on the Fontfroide Abbey website.
