From the Atlantic Ocean to the Causses du Quercy, the old pilgrimage route linked to the legend of the hermit Amadour is now fully signposted and will be inaugurated in the spring of 2023.
The approximately 500 km of pedestrian route are based on the legend of Zacchaeus, known as “Amadour”. The path connects the 4 departments (Gironde, Lot-et-Garonne, Dordogne and Lot) which would have been crossed by the hermit to retire to a cave in Rocamadour.
Amadour (Zachée) and his wife Véronique would have landed in the Médoc fleeing Christian persecution in Palestine. After founding Notre-Dame-de-la-fin-des-Terres, the current church of Soulac-sur-Mer, Véronique died. Amadour then left to evangelize the South-West by going up the Dordogne valley, and settled as a hermit in Quercy, in the place that would take the name of Rocamadour.
The route is divided into 21 stages, from 11 to 32 km. Along the way, you come across villages of character, such as Belvès, Domme, Sarlat or Rocamadour, but also landscapes as varied as the Gironde estuary, Entre-deux-Mers, the Dordogne valley, the Causses du Quercy…
The path can be traveled in its entirety (count around 25 days) or in sections to taste the beauty of these marvelous landscapes of the South-West.
