The Blue Flag, an international label for sustainable tourism for beaches and marinas, has unveiled its national awards for 2023. In France, 511 sites have obtained the label this year.
Developed in France by the association Teract, Blue Flag is an international label for sustainable tourism. It is awarded each year to marinas and towns for beaches that permanently implement a tourism policy that respects the environment and people, in order to reduce the impact of tourism on aquatic environments and on the biodiversity.
The label is based on nearly 100 criteria to preserve ecosystems – 40 for ports, 31 for municipalities and 26 for beaches –: soft mobility, waste and water management, clean bathing water, environmental education, etc.
This year, 511 sites obtained the label with 406 beaches and 105 ports in metropolitan and overseas France. The regions Occitania and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur (PACA) remain at the top of the list with 241 sites, i.e. almost half of the total number of labeled beaches and ports in France (47%). They are followed by the New Aquitaine with 60 beaches and 2 award-winning ports.
