Salvador Dali is not the only one linked to Catalonia. Pablo Picasso lived in Barcelona at the beginning of his career and several Catalan institutions pay tribute to the painter, whose 50th anniversary we commemorate this year. Many events and exhibitions are scheduled throughout this special year Celebrating Picasso.
To begin his Picasso journey on Catalan soil, it is absolutely necessary to visit the Barcelona Picasso Museum entirely devoted to the work of the artist. Its collection contains some 4,200 works and it organizes interesting temporary exhibitions, such as the one currently devoted to Picasso and food.
Also in Barcelona, the Palau de Caldes d’Estrac Foundation presents the collection of Josep Palau i Fabre, one of the greatest specialists in the work of Picasso. In addition to around fifty paintings by Picasso, the center has a library and a collection of Catalan paintings from the 20th century.
Then head to the Picasso Center Horta de Sant Joan, near Tarragona. This former hospital, which became the headquarters of the Picasso Center in 1992, brings together a collection of works, notably from the master’s Cubist period.
Another must-have is the Picasso Museum in Gosol brings together some 300 works by the artist, whose stay in Gosol, a small village in the Pyrenees, in 1906 had a decisive influence on the development of his art.
